Hristo Botev

Hristo Botev

If you are in Bulgaria on 2-nd June around noon, you are probably puzzled why there is “Alarm” sound in the air and everyone stopped their activity and stood still for one minute.

It’s the day of Hristo Botev and the struggle of the Bulgarians against the Turkish presence on the Balkans.

Hristo Botev is one of the Bulgarian national heroes.

He is born on 25-th December 1847 (January 6 in new style) in the city of Kalofer in a family of a teacher. (parents Botyo Petkoff and Ivanka Boteva). He studies in a school in the city of Karlovo as a kid, under his father’s supervision but later returns to his city of birth where he graduates. Later he goes in Russia and applies as a private pupil in the Odessa gymnasium and serves for few years as a teacher in a village’s school in Zadunayevka,

At 1867 he returns in Kalofer and starts to prepare a rebellion against the rich and the Turks. During his stay in Bulgaria, local newspaper called Gayda (a kind of music pipe) publishes his verses and espеcially “Thy mother” (“Майце си”).

From october 1867 he starts living in Romania, working in the city of Braila as an metranpist for the newspaper “Danube Sunrise” *(Дунавска Зора) Lies few years in prison for conspiration but released because of applied appeal and help from his comrades Levski and Karavelov (other Bulgarian revolutionaries).

May 1876 starts the April Uprising in Bulgaria, which is quickly overwhelmed by Turkish army, but when Botev heard about it – He started preparations for entering Bulgaria with an army of revolutionaries. They abducted a ship called Radetzky and forced the captain to land and embark on Bulgarian shores on 17-th may.

The battle is futile and Hristo Botev dies on 2-nd of June.

Saints Cyril and Methodius Day (24 may)

Cyrillic

Cyrillic

Also called the Day of the Slavic literature and alphabet.

Saint Cyril and Methodius were born in XI century with Byzantine parents  in the city of Solun (Thessaloniki). They have influenced all of the Slavic culture and traditions, and eastern orthodox church Bible is written in Greek and the original Cyrillic developed by the brothers and their pupils.

Saint Cyril and Methodius have actually created a set of signs called Glagolitsa (Глаголица) and later, their pupils and followers have simplified and evolved this set of letters to the one known in present days. This set is named after Cyril (younger of the two brothers).

Glagolic

Glagolic

The word glagol in old slavic language actually means word.  The original Glagolitic alphabet was a bit hard to understand and remember, and too different from Latin and Greek alphabets that were used widely for writing books at this time. For that reason, the Glagolitic alphabet was abandoned after the development of the Cyrillic almost half century later.

The Cyrillic is spread to wide use by the Bulgarian Tzar Boris who wished the Bulgarian church to be independent of the Constantinople. For those reasons he built two academic schools in the cities of Ohrid and Preslav and invited the remaining pupils of Cyril and Methodius to teach and develop books, codex of laws and a Slavic Bible.

From those schools, hundreds of educated pupils spread the books and bibles in the Slavic countries. It was readily adopted by many Slavic monarchs threatened by the heavy presence of western (catholic) and eastern (orthodox) churches of Rome and Constantinople.

The two brothers were finally declared saints by the Catholic church at late 19-th century by  pope Leo XIII.

Every Bulgarian school will have a holiday at this date and it’s the first day of the summer school vacation of the younger kids. There will be a small festivity held in every school with music and verses from various Bulgarian classic authors. The church will praise the saints with small procession holding in front an Icon of the brothers in large flower wreath.

Friday is the day.

Friday is always there for you.

There are above 16 millions of hits in Google that will show you what TGIF is about. It actually beats the image results for “cold beer”.

But I want to give my 2 cents also 😀 I have alarm on my desktop saying it’s Friday after all. And one of my colleagues is having a windows widget that’s making burping and farting sounds when pointed with the mouse and showing beers every Friday. We love this day.

So. What can be done to celebrate It?

    • Ask your boss to let you go early.
    • Ask your girlfriend/boyfriend to not wait for dinner.
    • Ask your girlfriend/boyfriend to take you to dinner.
    • Invite all your friend in FaceBook to a virtual party early in the morning.
    • Count the likes 😉
    • Really invite them to a party the same evening.
    • Search for sad people at work and cheer them with “It’s Friday”.
