Few things you should know about.

  • If you have not downloaded it yet, go to the market and get it. It’s a fine game even with the bugs and the 29-th level cap If you can’t afford to buy the key.
  • The key costs around 2 Euro. Get It from Android Market.
  • Dungeons are random. There are two non-random dungeons. The dragon tower and the Underworld.
  • Monsters in incomplete dungeons respawn every reentering. Dragon tower respawns when you logoff from the game.
  • There is only one city to rest, get quests, train and buy/sell stuff.
  • 4 NPCs outside the city walls are also giving quests. 2 beside towers, one Gnome and one Pirate sailor. They are easy to find. Look at the map.
Quest!: Swords and spells map

Quest!: Swords and spells map

  • Fight is done by slashing/tapping with your finger.
  • (3/4/5) digits on weapons means (attack/damage/speed).
  • Most repeatable quests have random target every time you login to the game. Recheck always.
  • Killing monsters is done one-at-a-time. Later in game, needing to kill spiders, wasps and skeletons becomes very boring.
  • There are no mass-kill spells.
  • The top game spells Bonfire and Death are very rare drop and … totaly useless. They only do 40 damage each.
  • Leveling is a bit of a PItA. You need to grind bats, spiders, wasps and skeletons until you get better equipment and reach levels 5-7.  Then you will have 3 repeatable quests. They are not much help, but they add up in the char building.
  • If you have more money than you spend for equipment and leveling – invest in potions. It is better with your 1600 gold to buy 10 purple potions for 800 gold instead of losing 800 gold because you did not have HP and mana to finish that ice dragon. Having excess money you don’t/can’t use is pointless. Every death in battle will halve your pockets and your gathered XP to next level.
  • Sometimes entering a house, you will be attacked by a very strong monster. If you can’t fight it – flee. The house entrance will stay blocked until you can win the fight. It’s probably a nasty bug, because some of the low level repeatable quests need you to enter a house and search inside. Never the less – I’ve seen Nakamamatay pop out from a house entrance and left him there (used “flee”). This way, the endgame fight did not cost me 3 more keys, when I felt ready for him 😉
  • Another nasty bug – Very often there will be re-closed gate after you exit and reenter the game. The Facebook fan page of the game claims “this should not happen”. Maybe in a future release or patch of the game – this will be fixed. In version 2.14 of the game, It’s still there though.
  • And often a chest guarded by a dragon is … empty.
And, another important thing -> If you don’t buy or can’t afford the game content unlock key than there will be a level cap on level 29. The game continues but you can’t level up anymore, so It’s up to you if you want to continue… and don’t tell anyone, but if you disable your WiFi/3G – there are no ADs 😉 Anyway. You really can’t finish the game with this, because the final quest is given at level 30. So you better go to Android market and buy the key. It’s not that expensive.

Quests.

Quest nameeXPerienceDescription
1.Celeste, your sister.50 XPShe is not in specific dungeon. Found by walking around the city. I was already level 4 when suddenly the quest finished itself alone. Only had to go to the city to claim it. (this quest is repeatable)
3.Old monk's relic.100 XPIt is in one of the houses. Totaly random one. Also repeatable.
4.Gnome's amulet.200 XPRandom chest in random dungeon. Opens a level 7 quest.
5.Become a hunter.250-500 XPNeed to kill Rattling skeletons, gnomes, wasps etc. Repeatable.
7.Item collection quest.500 XPThe items are need to be found, not bought. Random. Repeatable.
7.Gnome armour.350 XPNow the Gnome needs Leather jacket... and opens level 10 quest.
9.Kill a band of Orc warriors.750 XP.The best place to check is the 2 islands reachable by boats. Opens a level 11 mummy quest.
10.Silver jewelry for the gnome.750 XP.I really want to hit him already. Opens a level 13 quest.
11.Run mummy, run.1000 XP.Found in random dungeons more often. Opens the level 13 quest "Play dead".
13.Play dead.1500 XPDie by Orc Warrior's hand and be revived later. Easy quest. Not easy to find Orc warriors. Try the islands. The good part is - you will not lose money by this death. And the bonus for this quest completion is the +15 magic armour. He suggest you visit the other tower that gives level 15 quest. The tower is near the castle.
13.Shield for the gnome.1250 XPI suggest you stall this quest until he asks for cheap shield... Steel stuff is hard to be found. Opens a level 16 quest for a helmet. Again - can't buy the stuff. Need to find it by killing.
15.Leader of the orcs.2000 XPIf you followed the east tower quests until last one (level 13) you already killed the leader. If you got this quest before the other - it will be done automatically.
15.Croc hunt.1500 XPQuite hard for level 15. Takes 5 HP potions to kill the 2 Croc Warriors. Opens a level 20 quest.
16.Gnome's helmet.1750 XPNow he needs a helmet. The reward is +6 wizard hat. Yay. No. More. Gnome. Quests!
17.Demon hunt.3000 XPThe demon has 200 HP and 150 attack. Takes 5 purple potions to kill from level 25 char. Quite easy. The chests laying around have cheap junk though. Opens level 19 dungeon quest.
19.Dungeon masters.4000 XPNeeds a keys to unlock the path. There is bug in the game that consumes key, regardless the gate has already been unlocked, so beware not to just LOSE a hard found key.
20.Blind the beholder.2000 XPThe beholder can be reached if you have key or he spawns in some houses entrance. His position on the map is above the sailor in the southeastern end of the main island. The battle is hard and gives 2000 XP for killing and another 2000 when telling the pirate. He gives you a +5 amulet for your efforts and disappears. The way to the Nakamamatay underworld is now open.
25.Protect the kingdom.5000 XPYou need to kill Ancient golden wyrm. The path to the golden wyrm is by a horse ride (near the castle) and there are at least 50 groups of mobs until you reach the top of his "tower". Arm with patience ... and potions. It takes 20-25 minutes to reach the top. The battle is long and you will "miss" all of the time because of the wyrm's high defense. The wyrm hits around 70, so if you can't take 2 or 3 hits before dying - don't try this yet. I killed the wyrm @ level 50. Don't know why exactly, but this quest is also REPEATABLE.
30.Vanquish Nakamamatay.10000 XPThis one is only for unlocked game. The uber boss monster. Takes forever to kill. I drank a cup of coffee while tapping/slashing/freezing. 3 keys are needed to open the path to Nakamamatay. 2 for entrance and 1 other for his dungeon room.

The good equipment is only dropped by dragons, so if you are not around levels 25-29 you will have to go with what’s in the shop.
If you want to hunt dragons – invest in the spell “Freeze”. You will conserve lots of HP potions. You can kill a dragon with one blue or purple potion with this spell. And yet again -> If you don’t buy the game, there will be less equipment in the store and the good stuff that’s sold there will not appear. This, I am sorry to say – includes the spell Freeze, which is the dragon killer at lower levels.

How to level Up smart.

  • 1 point in Strength = +1.5 damage
  • 1 point in Endurance = +10 HP
  • 1 point in Intelligence = +10 MP
  • 1 point in Agility = +2 points in Attack.
  • Your total defense with best equipment will be 41.
  • Your total Attack is you base weapon attack + 2 x Agility.
  • Your total Damage is your base weapon damage  + 1.5 x Strength.
  • So, if you have 15 Str, 15 Agi and best game weapon [15/15/7] Magic axe, you will have 45 attack and ~40 damage.
  • Ideally, you aim for 15 Str, 15 Agi, 21 End, 16 Int.
  • … this is not achievable before level  55.

Dragon/boss kill tactics.

So far, even for low levels, the spell Freeze helps you not to die while landing (hopefully) successful hits for the 10 seconds while the dragon/boss is frozen. It costs 20 mana. Invest for higher Mana points in your hero while leveling, so you can cast this spell 6 or more times with one Blue potion. This way you will kill a dragon with only one or two potions. The potions cost 40 gold each. Most of the time the dragons drop stuff, that costs more.
Most, if not all hard monsters can be killed with level 30 character with this tactic BUT it will cost you lots of blue potions. Try to be patient until you reach level 40, have at least 160 HP and 100 SP. Then all ice dragons will fall with a single potion or less. Try also to find the Magic Axe. This weapon ROCKS. It is [15/15/7].

I’ve killed Ancient golden Wyrm with this tactics when I was level 50.

Nakamamatay is hard to reach if you are not lucky. He is in one room in the Underworld. This room is reachable with 3 keys only.

Where is Nakamamatay? Underworld, go down, until you reach a floor that has a small detour to the east with a square that can only be reached by going diagonally North-east. After few monsters, you will reach a third door with Nakamamatay inside.

He is easy to kill with the same tactics for Dragons/bosses. Use Freeze all the time, hit him until you need to recast Freeze. Don’t let him hit you even once. It DOES hurt alot. This final fight can take about 20 minutes of Freeze, Slash, slash, slash, … Freeze, so be prepared to dedicate one cup of coffee to It.

Nastiest bug in Quest!: Swords and spells v. 2.14

All the doors in the Underworld will re-lock again after you logout from the game. This bug really makes the fun go bad if you have not bought enough potions. If you plan on hunting/leveling/grinding there, get at least 100 of all kinds of potions. If the bug catches you between the first 2 doors, you are really frakked ;( Otherwise – relog few times until the monsters respawn. Kill everyone and hope they will drop 2 keys so you can escape.

My personal advice is – get 3 keys. Kill Nakamamatay and go outside immediately. This way the bug will not take your fun down.

How to change the default port value for SSH to listen to?

Go to /etc/ssh/sshd_config and change the line saying

Port 22 # < --- this line to something else. e.g. 2222
#AddressFamily any
#ListenAddress 0.0.0.0
#ListenAddress ::

Restart SSH daemon by invoking  /etc/rc.d/rc.sshd restart as root. This will make SSH to listen to port 2222.

How to make colorful grep command?

Suppose you like the Ubuntu’s colorful grep command. It’s actually very easy to be made on every Linux flavor. You need to alias the grep command this way:

alias grep='grep --color'

This ways grep will always be with option –color. And you need to set the color:

export GREP_COLOR=';32m'

;32m” here means green. But you may prefer other color. They are:

red 31
green 32
yellow 33
blue 34
magenta 35
cyan 36
white 37

If you want those settings remembered, enter the 2 lines for alias and export at the end of your ~/.bashrc file. That’s all.

How to make Xfce4 to support Cyrillic keyboard?

Put the following in the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Section "InputDevice"
 Identifier  "Keyboard0"
 Driver      "kbd"
 Option      "XkbModel" "pc105"
 Option      "XkbLayout" "en,bg"
 Option       "XkbOptions" "grp:alt_shift_toggle"
 EndSection

The option XkbLayout can also say [ru], [ua] or other Cyrillic using nations. The Option to set the button to Alt+Shift can also be changed.

The next step is to set your window manager to show the state changes. You only need to install the package xfce4-xkb-plugin.

How to change forgotten root password!?

I suppose it is YOUR own machine, and you are not trying to ruin it for someone else.

It’s a bit tricky if you don’t have root access to the machine. It can take forever to brute force a password with CLI or over SSH. I frankly don’t recommend this method. It’s for forgetful idiot script kiddies.

The only method good enough is if you have physical access to the machine.

Reboot with a live CD (or live USB stick). Your root file system is probably /dev/hdc or /dev/sda1. If unsure – use cfdisk and see which partition is made bootable. This is probably your root partition. Mount the filesystem in any mount point (e.g. /mnt/hdc).

mount /dev/hdc /mnt/hdc

Have a look at the file /mnt/hdc/etc./shadow. The file should look like this:

root:$1$w4BtrTq5$4NwUXg/ite/GysUCmaHf6.:15114:0:::::
bin:*:9797:0:::::
daemon:*:9797:0:::::
adm:*:9797:0:::::
lp:*:9797:0:::::
sync:*:9797:0:::::
...

Now… The first method is to clean everything in the first line from the $ (dollar sign) to the first : (colon sign) so it looks like the other lines below. But this will leave your machine vulnerable to anyone, because your root account will not have password. SSH forbids passwordless logins, but a little healthy paranoia is never in excess. Execute the following 2 commands:

adduser idiot
passwd idiot

Confirm the adduser dialog with dummy data. It’s temporary user after all.
Enter any password for the user “idiot” we just made and have a look at the live CD’s temporary  /etc/shadow file:

bash-4.1# cat /etc/shadow | grep idiot
idiot:$1$.Zf3P/ya$SISp/sFHX.gLPGKMDv5HJ1:15220:0:99999:7:::
bash-4.1##

We have the new password hash (or encrypted password if you like it more). We copy the string starting from the $ (dollar sign) up to the first : (colon sign) without the colon sign itself in the /mnt/hdc/etc/shadow file replacing the hash written there for root password.

That’s all. You only need to reboot the machine and remove the live CD. Your new root password is set.

*(The hash shown here is for the password “alabala” and It is for an example only. I don’t recommend using such short and weak palindrome for password.)

Solving a Sudoku, part II.

 Gam3s  Comments Off on Solving a Sudoku, part II.

If you are unfamiliar with the game, or this method is a bit advanced to you – please see my previous article about the 2 basic methods.

If you try to solve this grid by using the “Dim view” you will go almost nowhere. You will find some of the probable number positions and few exact positions. Of course, we feel lucky, and we may try.

This method is a bit more hard, I call it

Blocked squares

If you start using baby steps or dim view on this grid, you will end up with a grid filled with pencil scratches, some of them very useful, and some of them completely useless, until late game. You should of course, always give it a try with simpler and faster methods and then introduce some logic. The very basic trade of this method is to sweep a hard or very hard grid and point the possible numbers in any 3×3 area so you can block some of the squares inside.

Blocked squares

Blocked squares

Having a look in this scratched-a-bit grid on right, you will easily notice that left area of top plane has its bottom 3 squares with only possible numbers 1, 7 and 9. Rightmost area of same top plane has above 2 missing numbers either 7 or 9. Both of those areas leave us with some 4 more squares to guess, and some of those 4 squares are half solved.

Middle area of middle  plane has 2 blocked squares with either 1 or 3.

Bottom plane has it’s bottom left area with blocked numbers 3 or 4 and rightmost top are with line filed with 3, 4 or 8.

One more time

One more time.

This is not really helping much by first glance, but let’s repeat the procedure again and recheck this time only the areas with some blocked squares by baby steps, number by number. Having this passed again, you find, that the bottom plane has number 2 in 4 possible positions. Write them down and don’t mess with this method anymore for now, but keep it in mind for a bit later. It’s useful to have a pencil to write probable numbers, before making them with a pen. If you use pen directly, you may get the stuff wrong.

Lines and crosses

If you look at the grid above you will see it’s really going to fit in category very hard. It has only one possible solution, and it is suitable to explain  this method, because the 3 method explained so far … fail to make any number to it’s place. The name of the method explains almost everything. We find a line that has more than 3 numbers in it and try to build up from there.

Having a look at all the candidates in the grid with all the blocked squares, few things pop up.

  • There are rows with more numbers either written or probable.
  • There are columns with more numbers either written or probable.
  • There are crosses formed from those rows and columns.

What does that mean? Probably some easy numbers will pop up 🙂

First number

First number solved

Have a very careful look at topmost row 1. We have the following: X,8,6,5,5,1,7/9,3,7/9. 4 known numbers. 2 blocked squares. 2 positions with probable 5’s and one completely unknown. Missing numbers 2 and 4. Now we have a look at the numbers below. First square of this row can hold only 2 or 4 and 4-th square of the same row can also hold only 2 or 4 (have a good look at the columns). This leaves one of the squares with probable 5 obsolete and the next square beside it – absolutely certain. Can hold 5 and nothing more, because the other 2 missing, non-blocked squares will hold 2 or 4 and this exact square already has the numbers 2 and 4 in the 5-th column, so they CAN’T stand there.

Congratulations, we have the first number. We write it down and tap our shoulder proudly.

This one is particularly hard. It took me 1 (one) hour and I have made 4 errors. Will leave it this way, so you try your luck 😉
